Branding is an Extension and Expression of Who You Are

Branding with an Open Heart Series – Lesson 4: Illumination

Branding is an extension and expression of who you are. In this article, I will take you through simple steps of branding who you are.

Illumination A

What Makes You Shine?

Take a moment to get to know YOU. Describe yourself and your life in detail.

Start with a description of yourself (age, hair color, eye color, height…you get the picture).

Marital Status:

Describe your family life at home.

Who is your closest family member (other than your spouse and children)? What makes you so close?

Who are you closest friends? Describe why you are so close.

Who is your best friend? What does she like most about you? Ask her.

Do you have pets? What kind, how many? Names?

Not finished yet…keep going.

Now, describe your childhood up until your current life now. Tell a story for each section.

Age 5 – 12 years

Age 13 – 18 years

Age 19 – 25 years

Age 26 – 35 years

Age 36 – present

What are your favorite colors?

What is your favorite food? Beverage?

What is your favorite restaurant?

What type of books do you read?

What are your hobbies?

What is your favorite song? Who is your favorite singer?

What is your favorite movie/TV show? Actor/Actress?

Do you have any favorite blogs/magazines/websites?

What is your favorite quote?

Describe the region that you live in. Give details. Is it rural, suburban or urban?

Do you live in an apartment or house? Describe it in detail. Are you happy where you live?

What is your dream house or place to live?

Do you drive? What type of car do you have?

What type of car would you prefer?

What is your occupation? Do you enjoy it?

What is your dream job/business?

Describe your lifestyle?

What type of lifestyle do you dream of having?

What do you do in your free time? With family? Friends? Alone?

What do you love to do when no one is watching?

Do you take vacations? How often?

Where do you go?

What is your dream vacation?

Are you on a specific diet: vegan, vegetarian, sugar-free?

Do you exercise? How often? Describe what you do to stay fit.

Do you like sports? Any favorite teams?

Do you like to dance? Are you any good?

Where do you like to spend most of your time?

What makes you happy…really happy?

What makes you laugh?

What makes you glow?

Write down your personal and professional attributes, skills and talents. Include your education, trades, certificates, continuing education classes. Write everything that your friends, family and colleagues brag about when talking about you.

Just a little bit more…

Is there anything else you might want to add to the equation? Think. Think hard.

The Billion Dollar Question
If you had a billion dollars and never had to work again – ever, what would you do over and over, that not only makes you happy but helped others at the same time. It’s the thing that gives you a deep tingly feeling inside when you do.

What is it?

How does it make you feel (describe your deepest emotion that you get when you do it)?

How does it make others feel?

What do they say to you when they feel it?

Write down what makes you the absolute best. What makes you unique?

Wow…almost done!!

Find your strengths so you can build on it while you brand yourself and your business. Why not give your customers the very BEST of you.

No more hiding behind the computer. No more trying to stuff someone’s life inside your shoes.

Who am I? I can embrace what makes me unique {introvert, creative, analytical, funny, nerdy, classy, stylish}. This is who I am. This is my brand.

Now, who are you? Embrace your true essence…and brand it! Go ahead. Give it a whirl.

And when you are done, head on over to Pinterest and build a Brand + Mood Board of all of the things that make you shine. Click here to view my Brand + Mood Board.

  1. I’ve never thought of looking at my branding with the same breadth and depth I would use to explore an ideal client – mainly because I have a sense of what I want it to look/feel like, so don’t have to explain it to anyone. However you remind me, as with the IC avatar, the more I’m able to express what I want to convey in words, stories, images (even to myself), the better I’ll be able to convey that sense of who I (my brand) am (is) to the world.

  2. Wow! What a wonderful way to look at my branding. I am putting pen to paper to answer these questions and revisit my branding. It will also be a great way to connect with me, thank you for that!!

  3. what a fabulous exercise, denise! introspection is very important to me. i adore digging deep and deciphering what makes me unique (and it’s good practice, since it’s what i ask of my clients). i am beginning to offer more of myself to my audience through my branding, and it’s been a win-win. my clients receive better coaching and i feel more fulfilled.

  4. Great concept! Something that came from the exercise that really inspired and excited me (as well as put me in a great deal of gratitude), is that when I was looking at what I would do if I had a billion dollars and never needed to work again. I would still continue doing exactly what I am now, except with a lot more to give, share, donate, and a lot less pressure, stress, and distraction. I would take more time for those I love, but I would definitely continue my career path! Thank you!

  5. Oo la la! I love the suggestion for the Pinterest board. A way to make branding fun! And the series of thought-provoking, soulful questions is fantastic. I can’t wait to dive into this process!

  6. Okay.. printing this out 🙂 with thanks… You had me at ‘what makes you shine!!!!! ” I’ve been doing this a little these past days… changing a few things etc… and getting ready for summer and wanting to do it differently and with lots of joy…. so this, for me, is perfect timing. I’m printing it out…and I’ll see where I arrive… Namaste xo

  7. Yes, these days if you are in an online business, yes, we are our brand. So good in you for sharing, to help people be clear on who they are and how that vines through as a brand. If I had 1 billion dollars, yes, I would still be doing what I am doing, maybe a little differently, but I love what I do, Ian’s I am in a mission to help others who resonate with my work be guided to connect deeply with themselves and expand into who they are, without self imposed constraints.

  8. Oooh!! This is fab 🙂 “No more hiding behind the computer or trying to stuff someone elses life into your shoes!!” Some great questions here and an absolute sense of no apology for you you are, you are your brand! Lovely. Thanks Denise!
