Entrepreneurs are in business to change lives: theirs and others. The days of lifelong employment are long gone and entrepreneurs are taking control of their destiny. This ever-changing world requires us to reinvent ourselves and our lives…sometimes more than once.

While some of us have suddenly found ourselves in an unplanned transition, there are many who are just exhausted with the current situation. And, don’t know where to turn, where to start or have the right mindset to move forward.

Here’s the thing…, you can’t reinvent what you do not acknowledge. And, you can’t reinvent without setting your ego aside.

What is Branding with an Open Heart?

This blog series is to help you [the entrepreneur] lead with your heart in everything that you do. To be confident in your own skin and not be afraid to show the world what you’re working with. It’s designed to strip you down to the bare bone and build you back up so that you are clear and focused. Yes, there will be some blockage. And yes, there will be some rough waters. So, brace yourself. How you handle the first few years of being an entrepreneur will determine whether you will sink immediately, float for a little while or ride the wave for the long run.

I thought…what better way to help my peers than to take them through an exploration of themselves, not just where they are now, but before the marriage, before the kids, before college, before corporate ruled their life…plus create a life and business of their choosing.

Branding is the first step in the marketing process. A step most often skipped by the bootstrapper due to:

  • Not knowing where to start
  • Not knowing who they want to sell to
  • Not understanding who they are
  • Not having clarity
  • Rushing…without focus due to a desperate need of some sort — usually money.
  • Believing that everyone wants and/or needs their products
  • Misinterpreting or being fooled by “expert advice”
  • Putting visual branding first (because the web designer told you to)
  • Self-sabotage (the BIG ONE)

Look…before the brand name Nike, before the Swoosh, before the “Just Do it” tagline, and before the red and white color elements, there were two entrepreneurs who had a why…just like you. You can read the story here.

Branding starts with you…a why…and an idea. Take it slow and reflect to get to know yourself…again.

  1. It is so true that the first few years of entrepreneurship pushes us to explore our determination and dedication. Running a business requires countless hours, a positive attitude and an aptitude for dealing with all sorts of people. I found your comment about taking your client through an exploration of themselves before college, marriage and family to be thought-provoking as I am a completely different person now than I was as a young woman.

    • Yes, Lori, I often find myself reflecting back to my childhood trying to explore the young ‘me.’ It’s a part of who I am and my brand. I want my business to reflect that part of me. I am glad the post was helpful.

  2. Denise, I SO agree with your comment. “You can’t reinvent what you do not acknowledge. And, you can’t reinvent without setting your ego aside.” I got stuck here when starting to create my brand which is still evolving as I settle into my own exploration as an entrepreneur. Realizing that evolution is necessary and healthy was a stumbling block too! Great post.

  4. Working with a branding expert was THE NUMBER ONE thing I did to clarify my business and get it going for real. Up until then I knew that I was my brand, but I really did not have a full understanding of what that meant. After branding everything was clear and I was able to feel confident in what I was doing and the kind of clients that I could help. Thanks for the post Denise!

It is so vital to not only know what your intentions are an entrepreneur, but also to make sure that there is a firm foundation that it is set upon. I love the concept of branding with an open heart!     • Before I do anything with my business [writing a post, writing my sales copy, creating a product], I step back for a moment and breathe to make sure I am coming from a place of authenticity.   7. I totally agree with you Denise. Now is the time to find yourself when you felt most free, before influenced by what parents, teachers and society says. My wish – well i am really excited as my oldest, adult son has just told me his dreams of which i am included in creating a eco friendly retreat centre in which we slso both live and create as a family legacy. My wish is doorways open easily for us to manifest this in an energising, creative community way. This wish integrates my lifestyle living along side of family and building a family business.

I immediately sat down and wrote down my 3 wishes – they remind me, yet again, about what I’m striving for, but more importantly, it reminds me that there are ways that I can do, have, be those things right now. In that regard, I love what you said in your reply to Cathy S.: that you step back from every action you take in your business (and I could insert “life” here too), and measure it against your authenticity scale before going forward. Some days, I’m so busy trying to fulfill everyone else’s need and expectations, I forget that one vitally important step.

    • Yes, Cathy…I totally understand what it feels like to fulfill everyone else’s needs and expectation. But now, I have to remember, that I must put myself first to take care of those I love. Thanks for your comment.

  9. Loving your post, as I just came home from my office feeling weary and not at all satisfied with my career. I feel like I have fifty balls up in the air – this isn’t exactly what I thought it would be! I love your three questions and I am going to journal about them tonight!

  10. How refreshing to read this. I’m so glad their are entrepreneurs helping other entrepreneurs to listen to them selves and to follow that place. It’s so easy to get lost in the sea of the internet.

    To read Ghandi’s quote and then do the wishes… that was interesting for me.. .I never saw his quote like that…. so now that i have my 3 wishes… hmmmm…
